Job Description

This is technical work at the trainee level in assisting with the JSO property and evidence warehouse center to provide custody and control of all evidence for the sheriff’s office.  Processes and preserves evidence and property, i.e., intake, security, storage, chain of custody. Ensures all evidence/property is stored/warehoused/packaged in compliance with State Statutes and department procedures. Performs disposal/release of evidence, i.e., obtaining court orders, general destruction, auctions, interdepartmental use of unclaimed property, and donations to non-profits. Assists police personnel, outside law enforcement agencies, and the public with general information and inquiries concerning submission of evidence. Prepares for disposal of evidence, i.e., general destruction, auctions; prepares related paperwork concerning evidence disposal. Depending on functional area of assignment, duties and responsibilities may include: receipt, examination, handling, storage, and inventory of weapons, drugs, money, and biohazard material. Performs the disposal/release of evidence, i.e., obtaining court orders, general destruction, auctions, interdepartmental use of unclaimed property, donations to non-profit organizations. Runs criminal history checks on all persons claiming firearms to ascertain current warrant information and past history. Responds to call outs as needed. Works search warrants, as requested; attends court sessions pertaining to evidence received and the integrity of the chain of custody. Requires counting and maintaining large sums of money.  Contacts require skills in understanding and communicating with others which are important in responding to and resolving problems. Work is performed following somewhat diversified procedures and standards and involves similar situations requiring choice of correct procedures. Work is performed in both office and warehouse environments. Operates truck or van and loading equipment as well as standard office equipment to include hand/power tools to assist in loading and unloading supplies and equipment. The physical demands range from sitting or standing at a workstation for extended periods of time to moderate physical exertion in lifting and moving equipment and supplies weighing 50 pounds or more. Work is performed under general supervision where the work assignments are varied and, although subject to standard practices and procedures, the worker is permitted some latitude to set priorities subject to the superior's approval

Examples of Work

  • Accurately verifies all property/evidence received is correctly packaged, properly stored, and documented in a database system.
  • Ensures property/evidence is properly released, donated, purged or retained.
  • Ensures wet/contaminated evidence is properly handled and dried.
  • Maintains accurate records and files. 
  • Maintains property room security and logbook entries.
  • Prepares key box, lost-misplaced property, and monthly item count reports.
  • Performs heavy volume customer service. 
  • Operates a motor vehicle, forklift, office equipment, and machinery.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in the City of Jacksonville Core Competencies.
  • Tasks are performed in a warehouse environment where proper provisions are in place in terms of employee security and protection. Some tasks are performed in an outdoor environment. Due to the nature and locations of the work environment, tasks include potential for intermittent exposure to disagreeable elements consistent with routine conditions in a warehouse environment and traffic, e.g., heat, humidity, loud noise, inclement weather, weapons, toxic/chemical agents, pathogens. Some tasks include working around moving parts, carts, and materials handling, where physical risks are predictable and/or controllable by observance of standard safety precautions.
  • Maintains confidentiality of records and other sensitive information.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in the City of Jacksonville's competencies.
  • Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of Sheriff's Office procedures and policies as relates to property and evidence procedures.
  • Knowledge of techniques, methods, and procedures used in operating a warehouse. 
  • Knowledge of computerized inventory management and distribution systems.
  • Knowledge of standard office practices and procedures.
  • Skill in performing basic arithmetical computations.
  • Ability to read, understand, and apply JSO written orders.

Open Requirements/Supplemental Information

OPEN REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school diploma/GED. Must have at least one (1) year of higher education or one (1) year of clerical experience. Must be able to type 30 words per minute.

 

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • The probationary period for this classification is one (1) year. This classification performs safety-sensitive functions and is subject to pre-employment, random and other drug/alcohol testing programs as set forth in the City of Jacksonville’s Drug Free Workplace Policy (0401).

 

LICENSING/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION

  • FL Class E Driver's License is required prior to appointment and must be maintained. 
  • City of Jacksonville Public Driver Certification must qualify for prior to appointment, obtain and maintain during employment.
  • Forklift Certification must be obtained and maintained during employment.
