Job Description

This is fleet maintenance support work in maintaining, moving and cleaning vehicles. Work requires a knowledge of basic vehicle operations and maintenance. Contacts require courtesy, tact, and effectiveness in dealing with others, and includes contacts to request or provide information, ask questions, or obtain clarification. Work is performed following established routines, procedures, and standing instructions, and is patterned involving similar situations and generally requiring only the choice of the correct procedure. Work is normally performed in a field environment, where the risks and hazards are minimal, known, predictable, and controllable, and where there is exposure to noise, dust, dirt, or other unpleasant conditions.  Physical demands consist of visually inspecting vehicles and associated equipment; sitting, standing, or walking for extended periods; and occasionally lifting objects weighing 50 pounds or less; and the ability to work in extreme weather conditions.  Operates a vehicle, two-way radio, and standard office equipment such as a personal computer. Work is performed under general supervision where the work assignments are subject to instructions and established work routines, and the worker is given latitude to rearrange the sequence based on changing work situations, or workflow.

Examples of Work

  • Performs general services relating to cleaning and fueling vehicles, equipment, and tools.
  • Cleans, washes, and maintains assigned work locations.
  • Operates automotive equipment for the purpose of moving from one repair and maintenance area to another.
  • Operates motor vehicles for the purpose of transporting supplies, equipment, and personnel.
  • Reports vehicle discrepancies to supervisors.
  • Regularly starts vehicles and inspects for issues.
  • Operates two-way radio systems.
  • Washes and cleans vehicles.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in the City of Jacksonville’s competencies.
  • Performs related work as required.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of basic car maintenance.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle.
  • Ability to operate automotive equipment.
  • Ability to read and write English.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to lift and move objects weighing less than 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work in outdoor working conditions.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including prolonged periods of standing or walking.

Open Requirements/Supplemental Information

OPEN REQUIREMENTSMust have at least one year of driving experience. Experience in working in an automobile detailing setting is preferred. 

 

LICENSING/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION:  A valid driver's license is required prior to appointment and must be maintained during employment in this class. Must qualify for prior to appointment, obtain, and maintain during employment in this class a City of Jacksonville Certification as a Public Driver.

 

OTHER REQUIREMENTSThe probationary period for this class is six months. This classification performs safety-sensitive functions and is subject to pre-employment, random and other drug/alcohol testing programs as set forth in the City of Jacksonville’s Drug Free Workplace Policy (0401).
