This is administrative work in providing support to the security of correctional facilities. The work is routine in that tasks are covered by standard operating procedures and instructions but employees have the latitude to consider variations based on work circumstances due to the nature of the work environment.  Work is performed in a controlled environment; however, employee is subject to risks and hazards which are substantial and unpredictable. The work is performed under general supervision where work assignments are subject to instructions and established work routines. Work is performed in accordance with Sheriff’s Office rules, regulations, policies and procedures. Members are expected to work with some independence. Work requires the ability to comprehend and apply law enforcement and public safety operation procedures, which is learned through extensive training that consists of several phases of classroom and on-the-job training. Communication with the public and First Responders require the ability to analyze situations and determine the effective course of action; adjust quickly to changing situations while assessing time and sensitive information; perform several tasks at the same time and assign appropriate priorities, signals, and codes to incoming calls for services while monitoring multiple frequencies and viewing multiple computer/camera screens. Must have the ability to maintain an efficient and calm demeanor in handling adverse or stressful situations for an extended period of time in a high volume public safety work environment. Work requires sitting for prolonged periods of time wearing a headset, which restricts movement in the work area. Work is performed under general supervision where the dispatcher works under clearly defined procedures but has latitude to set priorities based on the events that are occurring at the time. Hours of operation are 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The employee is primarily scheduled for shift work hours. Work periods may have permanent or rotating days off, frequently requiring the employee to work holidays, weekends, evenings, and nights. The employee is subject to work overtime, being held over or called back to work for disasters, local emergencies, or special events. Public Safety work involving police services in the investigation and enforcement of traffic laws and ordinances as related to automobile accidents and to assist in the protection of life and property on roadways. Work follows standard operating procedures; however, the employee has the latitude to determine what procedure or precedent to follow based on the work situation. Community Service Officers are confronted with various situations which require quick assessment and the use of good judgment to resolve issues that may arise. The daily community service tasks are performed in the field in an uncontrolled environment, where risks and hazards are substantial, generally unknown and unpredictable. Operates a Community Service Officer vehicle equipped with emergency traffic lights, Jacksonville Sheriff?s Office markings, mobile radio and other electronic data communication devices, and related law enforcement equipment. Work requires sitting, standing, or walking for long periods of time and may require physical exertion. Work is performed under general supervision where work assignments may vary and, although subject to standard practices and procedures, the Community Service Officer is permitted some latitude to set own priorities subject to superior's approval.

Contacts require basic courtesy, tact, and effectiveness in dealing with others, and includes contacts to request or provide information, ask questions, or obtain clarification. The work is routine following established routines, standing instructions, and established procedures, but some variation in the sequence of procedures used is permitted based on situations encountered in the workplace. The correctional security work is patterned involving similar situations and generally requiring only the choice of the correct procedure. Work is performed in a somewhat uncontrolled environment, where risks and hazards are substantial, but are known, somewhat predictable, and mostly controllable. Operates motor vehicles, electronic security and monitoring equipment, firearms, chemical agents, restraining devices, breath analyzer, and metal detectors, as well as standard office equipment such as personal computers. The physical demands consist of standing, walking, or sitting for extended periods of time and sometimes involve physical exertion to restrain inmates or quell a disturbance. Work is performed under direct supervision where the work assignments are subject to instructions and established work routines, and the worker is given latitude to rearrange the sequence based on changing work situations.

Operates police vehicle equipped with mobile radio and other electronic data, communication devices, firearms, restraining devices, and related law enforcement equipment. Work requires sitting and walking for long periods of time and requires physical exertion in pursuit and restraint of individuals. Work is performed under direct supervision where the work assignments vary and are although subject to standard practices and procedures.

Under the direct supervision of the JSO Safety & Prevention Unit, the School Crossing Guard is responsible for the safe and orderly crossing of school-age children at their assigned location. Work is performed under direct supervision and in accordance with established rules and regulations procedures established by the Florida Department of Transportation. Advice and assistance are available in unusual situations via your Supervisor or the School Crossing Guard Administration Office. A School Crossing Guards work is reviewed through inspection twice a year and annual training is required.

Under general direction, acts as a minor officer of the court with the general duty and responsibility of ensuring courtroom security, safety, and proper decorum and obtaining and providing information required by judges, works under the direction of a certified officer who acts as Chief Bailiff for the judge presiding.

Reserve Police Officers perform respective law enforcement duties in a support role, under the general supervision of an assigned Sergeant or Control Officer. This is a non-paid volunteer position.
